One of the high quality materials used to make mattresses, pillow and mattress toppers, is memory foam. This is basically a polyurethane that has been included with extra chemicals that enhances its density and viscosity. The memory foam material will soften, in relation to the heat of the body. For that, it will wrap a warm body, hence giving it an advanced comfort. It will also recover to its original shape when the weight is removed from it. The recovery process is very quick and it is one of the reasons why the memory foam is highly rated. When you need to shape or cut the memory foam, it can be quite challenging, but with the right equipments, you can make it an easier process. Here is how to cut memory foam.
1. Get the necessary resources
You will first need to prepare the materials that you will use in the cutting process.
- a pencil
- a marker
- a paper to use as a template
- electric carving knife
- and a tape measure
2. Make the measurements
Start by measuring the size of the memory foam that you need, depending on what you need it for, whether you need it for a pillow or a mattress. When you have the measurements, mark them on the paper that you will use as a template. Suppose you need a memory foam mattress topper, you will need to cut and remove the template, then mark the lines straight on the memory foam. You will want to use a straight edge or a yardstick to make a line that you will cut along, on the memory foam.
3. Mark the lines
You will then place the template on the memory foam, where you need to cut, then ensure that you have aligned it as expected. Trace along the lines using a permanent, fine tip marker.
4. Start cutting
You will need to place the memory foam onto a hard surface, with the edges that will be cut hanging off the surface. You might want to check below the memory foam to ensure that the section to be cut is hanging off the hard surface. Hold the foam with one hand and the other one should hold the electric knife to cut the foam.
Before you start cutting the foam, place the knife blade to cut straight via the foam, devoid of having any angle. Do not force the knife to cut via the foam, rather, place it in the required position and let it cut by itself. Forcing the blade can give you an uneven edge that is jagged.
When using the electric knife, ensure that you keep the cords, fingers, or any other materials away if it is running. Suppose you are cutting a memory foam mattress topper, you can use a workbench or a table surface to place the foam.
Ensure that you are in a comfortable position before you start cutting the memory foam. You might want to start working with a scrap foam, in order to know how to cut memory foam in the right way. Above all, ensure that you are cautious enough when you are using the electric knife, since it is very lethal.
